<< Columbus Day

(please read a passage)

He was called Cristoforo Colombo in Italian, Cristobal Colon in Spanish and today Americans call hin Christopher Columbus. Worldwide, he's called the discoverer of America. Some people might wonder why. After all, Columbus didn't set out in search of new continents, and he never realized that he had found any. Moreover, he wasn't the first European to set foot in the Western Hemisphere. Long before his time Vikings probably reached the New World. Historians also believe that, in the fourteenth century, Portugese and English fishing boats crossed the Atlantic Ocean and landed in Newfoundland and Labrador...

<< Sport: The Davis Cup

(please read a passage)

Have you ever been to a tennis tournament? Well, I go to the stadium to see live tennis every time I get a chance. Just recently I went to see the Davis Cup semi-final clash between Russia and Argentina. It was an amazing experience; much of the excitement was created because the Russian team played very well. And won. Marat Safin beat Juan Ignasio Chela, then on the same day Yevgeny Kafelnikov beat Gaston Gaudio. It was a fantastic match and Kafelnikov showed amazing determination to win...

<< Nature: What is going on?
(is our climate changing)

(please read a passage)

Jerome K. Jerome said that we are never happy with the weather. The weather, like the government, is always in the wrong. But something has been really wrong with it lately. Droughts, wildfires, landslides, avalanches, gales, tornadoes, floods... All over Europe it's the same story. The weather is definitely getting worse and the so-called extreme weather events are becoming more and more frequent.

Scientists have noticed it too. Their explanation is short: the cause is global warming.

<< Music and Musicians: Belle Is The Only Word

(please read a passage)

Victor Hugo published Notre Dame de Paris in 1831, but his tragic tale of a hunchback bell-ringer and his love for a beautiful Gypsy girl Esmeralda is enjoying something of a modern boom. It has inspired at least five movie versions and a recent musical, which has become the biggest musical event in Europe.

<< Personality Test: Do you enjoy feeling scared?

(please read a passage)

Do you enjoy feeling scared? Do the quiz and find out. Read the story carefully. Then choose the explanation you like best. You will find out whether you enjoy feeling scared, are crazy about mystery, or whether you are a logical person.

<< Culture Shock - What is it?

(please read a passage)

Have you ever had to move to a new house, visit a new country or change schools? Do you remember that experience? How easy was it for you to get used to the new place and people?

Moving to a new environment cannot be easy. The difficult period during which people gradually become comfortable in the new environment is called culture shock.

<< Spider -Man - a Superhero for the 21-st Century

(please read a passage)

Superman, Batman, Spider-man - they have much in common. In ordinary circumstances they are ordinary, normal people, not different from anybody else. But when the moment comes, they turn into superheroes and spend most of their time helping good guys and fighting bad guys.
